Scholarship program for tenants leads to success

October 30, 2020

Before becoming a Link Housing resident, Natasha and her one-year-old child left a domestic violence relationship and experienced a short period of homelessness.

With the assistance of Link Housing, Natasha was offered accommodation in a women’s refuge until suitable housing became available. She then moved into temporary housing. And now, she is living in one of Link Housing’s social housing properties on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Natasha’s domestic violence experience made her want to give back. She decided to study this area of social work to help support women and children who face domestic violence. Wasting no time, she applied for Link Housing’s Scholarship program for tenants, which she read about in Link Housing’s tenant newsletter, Community Link.

Since earning a scholarship, Natasha has achieved her goal of completing a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and writing a thesis on how to prevent domestic violence.

The Scholarship Program for tenants has helped Natasha with the costs of textbooks and university fees, which can be expensive. Natasha appreciates the many services and life-changing opportunities that Link Housing provides.

In addition, Natasha is thankful for her family support coordinator from Manly Warringah Women’s Resource Centre, one of Link Housing’s support partners. The family support coordinator helped her to find a stable home, as well as providing her with financial help, emotional support, job searching and access to counselling.

“Housing is a basic need, but the current housing market is causing people to face challenges in meeting expenses and supporting themselves. It’s important that people have a roof over their head and access to services to get back on their feet and explore job and education opportunities,” said Natasha.

Applications for Link Housing’s Scholarship Program for tenants are still open. Application forms need to be returned by the 30 November 2020.  You would have received a hard copy application form if you received the Spring tenant newsletter by post. You can also complete the Scholarship application form online and return it by email to CommunityEngagement@linkhousing.org.au.

For enquiries, please call Link Housing on 9412 5111.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome in early January 2021, with scholarships awarded and funds transferred in January 2021.
