As part of our 35 Year Birthday celebrations and in the lead up to our Birthday event on Sunday 17 November 2019, we are featuring long-standing residents, staff and partners who are part of our Link Housing story. Here we feature Link Housing resident, Ian.
Link Housing resident, Ian, shares his tenant experiences and some of the interesting places he’s lived during his lifelong vocation as a church pastor. He’s also been a member of Link Housing’s Tenant Advisory Group (TAG) contributing to the improvement of Link Housing tenant services.
If you haven’t met Ian, you’re missing out on an interesting conversation with a humble man.
Imagine a young 22-year-old carpenter working in Kalgoorlie (Western Australia) circa. 1970 returning back to his home town in Sydney, and then deciding to become a church pastor. His new vocation took Ian and his wife to India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and other countries working on long term projects helping people with challenges in their lives and communities.
As a long-term Link Housing resident, Ian enjoys participating in tenant events like the annual Tenant Christmas Party Link Housing hosts each year as well as being part of his local community.
Now 71-year-old, Ian’s life is quieter although he still contributes time and energy to some church work in Sydney.
He and his neighbours meet each week for afternoon tea, they celebrate birthdays and other events. There’s true common ground for these Link Housing residents, one neighbour is a retired nun and another neighbours’ parents worked as missionaries – between bible study and tea there’s no shortage of conversation starters.
Ian says, “The benefits of being a Link Housing tenant for me have been, and are, that staff are always approachable which helps with maintenance. I have a good relationship with the Housing Managers and they’re efficient with attending to issues.”
A while ago, an acquaintance of Ian’s received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis and was unsure of her future accommodation options, especially for safe and secure accommodation as her condition progresses. He brought her into Link Housings’ Chatswood office, introduced her and helped her complete application forms there. In time, she was able to be safely and comfortably housed in a Pennant Hills Link Housing property, with her son.
After his own health issue about 12 months ago, Ian enjoys and appreciates where he lives.
“Myself and my wife live in an accessible and quiet location, where we’re able to live in peace and harmony with those around us. It’s all valuable,” he says.
We invite you to celebrate our Link Housing 35 Year Birthday with us on Sunday 17 November 2019, from 11am to 3pm at Chatswood Oval (Albert Ave & Orchard Rd) for a Sunday fun day with refreshments, entertainment and more!
